Help Preparing and Using Images on the Network

What are property pictures?

BookingCenter.com maintains an extensive database of hotels, including comprehensive photographs of each property on the system.

These hotel pictures are displayed on each property's booking page and on the Network Partner's websites.

The purpose of hotel images are to allow web users to get an idea of what the hotel looks like before they actually book it. This is the reason we have established guidelines for what is and is not acceptable for photo submission.

What photos do I need?

Several types of photos can be used for each property:

Where can I see my property’s photos?

Click on the link to view the images the world is seeing from your property (this is what BookingCenter.com has on file for you now. To change it, do a Full Update from your BookingCenter software. Help me do it!

All these images are placed in your BookingCenter software under Parameters | System Graphics. You will need to have the images on your hard drive in .jpeg format. Click the “Image” icon: t o choose them.

Room Type images are placed from Parameters | Room Types. You will need to have the images on your hard drive in .jpeg format. Click the “Image” icon to choose them.

Once assigned, each time you do a Full Update your BookingCenter software will replace any images that have changed.

What should I look for in photos to submit?

Image quality is extremely important. We must have the best possible photos in our database in order to remain competitive.

Please note that all borders, fuzzy edges, fancy trim, logos and type will all be cropped out of the final image. Try to avoid submitting images that require us to crop out a square area inside a circle or odd shape.

A general rule of thumb on electronic images is; the bigger the better. However, Individual images with file sizes larger than 2 mgs each can slow down production.

Please make every attempt to submit images no smaller than the photo target sizes listed below.

Photo target sizes:

If you are unsure about how to assess these sizes, simply right-click (Windows) or click-and-hold (Macintosh) on an image on the web and choose "view image". This loads the image alone. You should see in your browser’s title bar the dimensions in pixels.

Images from the web

Currently, only two image formats apply to images on the Internet: jpeg (.jpg) or CompuServe's GIF (.gif). The jpeg format is currently the best for image quality, (GIF format uses a compression algorithm that lowers the file size at the expense of image quality.) If at all possible please submit the jpeg format.

Files larger than 2 megabytes don't consistently make it to us. If your images are larger than 2 megabytes, please either .zip them (on Windows) or .sit them (on Macs).

Images to be scanned

BookingCenter.com will scan your images for a small fee of US$50.00. Slides, transparencies and photos scan the best. However, we are also able to scan brochures and other printed material, provided the printing and image quality is high enough.

Again, all borders, fuzzy edges, fancy trim, logos and type will all be cropped out of the final image. Please try to avoid submitting these for hotel pictures.

DO NOT write on a photograph, EVEN ON THE BACK, as the pressure of the pen or pencil will distort the image on the other side and/or ink can bleed through.

What qualifies as an acceptable photo?

For hotel exterior photos, it is important that the ACTUAL HOTEL EXTERIOR IS IN THE PHOTO, This means that a photo of the view or pool with no hotel in sight will not be accepted. Under special circumstances we will accept photos of the interior of the properties lobby.

All hotel pictures must be in color and should focus on what the exterior of the hotel really looks like. Please do not submit photos of just the hotel's sign or other small part of it's facade.

Similar criteria apply to all hotel pictures.

The BookingCenter.com art department reserves the right to reject any submitted photos, based on any relevant criteria.

What qualifies as an unacceptable photo?

A photo that is too small, not of the correct subject matter, black and white, poor quality, blurry, distorted, under or overexposed, etc.

What about images of a hotel's pool or view?

At this time there is no official place on our Network web sites for placement of hotel views or pools. However in anticipation of future enhancements, we will process both view and pool shots. Hopefully they will be coming soon!

Can I submit a photo of the exterior of a cabin for a room shot?

Yes. If a property has cabins or separate buildings for rooms or room types, we will accept an exterior of the cabin for a room shot. However we encourage properties to also provide an interior photo in addition.

Can I submit an illustration for a hotel picture?

No - we’re sorry - the Network Partners we work with will not accept illustrations.

Can I submit a logo for a hotel picture?

NO, Logos are never acceptable hotel pictures.

What does the BookingCenter.com photo department do with the photos?

Once the Art Department receives the photos we'll scan, format, crop and color correct the image and then "ftp" (file transfer protocol) them.

What won't the BookingCenter.com photo department do with the photos?

Occasionally, we will receive specific requests to effect images in a particular way. For instance; "Can you make the sky bluer?" "Can you airbrush out that lady in our lobby?" or "Can you send us back the images after correction?" The answer to all these questions is no.

The BookingCenter.com art department will enhance the images within a complex, specific set of internal guidelines at our sole discretion. BookingCenter.com and BookingCenter.comare not in the business of image enhancement. If a hotel needs enhancement for a photo, the hotel should contact a service bureau or other organization to handle the graphic needs.
